Receiving Jesus as the Living Water

This world is filled with wells that promise to provide love, acceptance, and self-worth but never fully satisfy. When your soul is empty and the well runs dry, look for Jesus. He has a divine appointment scheduled with you, and He will quench your thirst with His Spirit—if you let Him.” Charles Stanley

The world we live in provides a variety of sources for finding satisfaction, albeit temporary relief. We drink different kinds of medication, but it only provides relief, not really providing healing. It is a reality everyone readily accepts wholeheartedly. Why? It is the only choice, so it seems. Even the simple act of drinking plain water became a booming business with various brands and flavours. But keeping in mind that simplicity is still the best option, the Everyday Health website provides specific benefits of water in our body:

·       Water Protects Your Tissues, Spinal Cord, and Joints

·       Water Helps Your Body Remove Waste

·       Water Aids in Digestion

·       Water Prevents You from Becoming Dehydrated

·       Water Helps Your Brain Function Optimally

Knowing the value of water in our everyday lives, we can then appreciate the spiritual value of Jesus’ words, using water as a powerful metaphor for proclaiming Himself as the Living Water. It is written in John 4:13-14, “Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”  Whether one believes it or not, Jesus uttered an antithesis to what the world provides. He came against offering a temporary provision towards a satisfaction of thirst and longing. It is a promise He intends to keep for those wanting it. In other words, He is the Source of Living Water.

The apostle Paul declared that Jesus is the Rock and the Water of Life: “…and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ...” (1 Corinthians 10:4). Why is this significant? Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers[1] shared this insight:

“There was a Jewish tradition that the Rock—i.e., a fragment broken off from the rock smitten by Moses—followed the Israelites through their journey, and St. Paul, for the purpose of illustration, adopts that account instead of the statement in Numbers 20:11. The emphatic repetition of the word “spiritual” before “drink” and “rock” reminds the reader that it is the spiritual and not the historic aspect of the fact which is present to St. Paul’s mind. The traditional account of the Rock was a more complete illustration of the abiding presence of God, which was the point that the Apostle here desires to bring forward. As Christ was “God manifest in the flesh” in the New Dispensation, so God manifest in the Rock (the source of sustaining life) was the Christ of the Old Dispensation.”

Looking for that one or more “fix” many missed and even totally ignore what Jesus offers. I hope that I’ve introduced Him to you today. What many are looking for in the world can only be found in Jesus. He is the Living Water that satisfies the unquenchable thirst and longing of every man and woman. He is always available to those who seek Him wholeheartedly. Try it, and you’ll never be disappointed.

 Let’s talk again!
